Lockdown not knockdown – Motivation+Goals

From our lead trainer, Graham – talking about the lockdown, goals and motivation…

Well, today I cracked it. I ran 10K straight for the first time in my life…

It’s not usually my style to big myself up, I much prefer to lift others up, but today I wanted to share my long-held goal with you.

Being built more for strength than speed, I’d never managed to get to grips with this running lark. Que lockdown. I decided that no-way was I going to vegetate, so I set myself a number of BHAGs, then set about breaking them down into achievable milestones.

First run out the door, March 24th, 05:30, frost on the ground and ‘Couch to 10K’ told me that I just had to run for 6 minutes, in 1 min intervals with 1.5 min walking rests. Yep, I can handle that, I thought. After 25 mins, I got back and was heaving a lung. This wasn’t fun.

At that point, I could’ve quit, banged the running shoes on eBay and accepted what had been the SOPs for my life thus far, or I could dig deep, get my head down and push through – no matter what.

Me being me, I decided to incorporate hill climbs into my preferred training route, every run. The conditioning would do me good, I thought. It almost caused me to heave my other lung.

Despite the pain, the runs started to rack-up, with wall after wall being smashed. My running was becoming my metaphor for dealing with the lockdown and the paralysis in my business.

42 runs later and today, as I ran, I felt the buzz from the Garmin on my wrist and I looked down to see that I’d run through 10K – bloody hell, I’d only done it!

What next? I can’t stop now, can I? The 21K Runner app is already downloaded and ready to roll on Friday – with my first marathon in my sights next year.

10K isn’t far in the greater scheme of things and my time wasn’t Olympic – BUT I’d smashed a goal that I’d had in the back of my mind for 30 years – I’d taught myself how to run.

Goals are relative and very personal, but completely inert without action – get out there and grab the day folks, make a dream come true.
