Employers: keep your furloughed employees engaged, so your business is in the best shape for the return to work.

The concept of furlough is not a new one, but during the COVID-19 crisis, it has risen from relative obscurity to reality for millions around the world. With it, comes new challenges for employers to keep staff ready to return to work, with engagement chief among them.

So while furloughed employees are under strict instruction not to undertake working duties, employers remain responsible for providing a duty of care. In addition, savvy businesses will be thinking about how they can ensure that furloughed employees remain engaged to the extent that when normal work resumes, they will be able to ‘pick up where they left off’.

Training can be the corner stone of engagement for your team.

The benefits of remote training for your furloughed staff

Offering training to furloughed staff is a great way to ensure that your team will be ready to hit the road running when life returns to normal:

  • Keep your staff engaged
  • Employees will feel valued
  • Group activities maintain team cohesion
  • Great way to combat social isolation
  • New and improved skills lead to increased confidence
  • Business is HSE compliant on the return to work

Government advice

Employees who have taken a furlough during this time are encouraged to undertake staff training, which is not restricted.

UK Government guidance with regard to the rules on furloughed staff >

“The training has been invaluable, by keeping the team together (and sane!), and also ensuring the business is compliant when we’re all able to get back to work”
